Cycling in Winter: Only with Merino

Merino is one of the world’s oldest breeds of sheep that are said to have the finest and softest wool available. It’s perfect for all kinds of moderate and extreme weather conditions...

Merino wool-producing sheep were first introduced back in the 18th century Spain, Australia and southern Alps in New Zealand. Grazing the steep mountain slopes in extreme conditions ranging from +35 degrees Celsius in summer to -20 degrees Celsius in winter, Merino sheep have gradually adapted and developed a permeable and protective wool coat.

SPORTS + MERINO = LOVE STORY

You’ve probably experienced this: it’s below zero outside, you start riding, wishing you could have put on something warmer. But when you intensify your ride, warm up, start sweating — you dream to lose a layer or two just to feel more comfortable. With Merino-based apparel this won’t happen.

It acts like the second skin, wrapping around and insulating your body, regulating its temperature. Here are some facts:

  • Excellent absorbing properties. It doesn’t matter if it gets humid outside or your body produces excessive amount of sweat, it absorbs moisture up to 35% of its dry weight. Your skin will stay dry and non-sticky, thus you won’t feel too warm or too cold.
  • It locks away odor molecules — you won’t have a bad smell after intensive ride.
  • It is elastic — will wrap around your body and won’t stretch after many washes.
  • It is ultralight, soft and breathable.
  • It doesn’t cause irritations due to its antiallergic and anti static properties

The cyclist’s performance is very much dependant on the weather and body condition. Even a slight discomfort can lower results dramatically. That’s why the above written properties make Merino the best material for cyclists all year round.

We focus our apparel production on the Merino wool
and would like to guide you through the best Merino products.

Base layers

Since a base layer directly contacts with your skin, we made it 100% Merino wool. It is ultra-light, soft and breathable product — it will be the first layer to keep you warm and dry in the below-zero conditions. It wraps around you, without limiting your movements, and keeps your body temperature at the optimal level.

Merino Jerseys

Our flagship. We make them from the finest Merino bi-component material. All of them are able to withstand extreme conditions, whether it’s freeze or heat. They are compact, soft, light and breathable — a timeless and durable companion for cyclists.

Merino Jackets

With the finest Merino wool inside and waterproof membrane on the outside, they are the must-have during winter rides. The jacket is warm, breathable and elastic.

Merino socks & accessories

We can’t overlook the feet protection during winter. Merino socks contain the same properties as our other Merino products. And of course, our accessories are perfect for a mild winter, when you don’t need many layers, but want to stay warm anyway.

The Great Merino Experiment:
15 minutes without a drop of sweat on a 20 minute run

In a study conducted by the department of the Clothing & Textile Sciences at The University of Otago, New Zealand, merino proved itself to be a perfect active-wear material.

The sensory responses of ten trained male athletes were compared while wearing three knit fabrics: polyester, mix of merino and polyester and 100% merino. The athletes ran for 20 minutes and walked for 10 minutes in two environmental conditions: hot (32˚C) and cold (8ºC).

The results?

Body temperature, sweating and heart rate were significantly better while wearing merino. In sunny conditions, for example, the onset of sweating was within 9 minutes in polyester, while merino lasted for 15 minutes. This was even better at cold conditions: merino gained 10 minutes on polyester.

Another example

Significantly higher increase in core temperature was evident following running when wearing polyester vs. merino.

The full results for the 100% polyester and 100% Merino are presented in the charts in this article. Results for Merino/polyester blend garment were approximately half that of the 100% Merino wool garment.
