Born to Climb: Breathtaking and brutal – Mount Fuji

As part of our posts about the greatest mountain climbs, we are now heading to Japan's Mount Fuji.

15.6.2016 – Words by Martin Velits

Distance: 11.4 km / 7 mi

Location: Mount Fuji, Honshu island, Japan

Avg. grade: 9.97%

Maximum: 16%

Elevation: 3,776 m (12,388 ft)

Ascent: 1,159 m (3,802 ft)

Its relief is unique as its culture. Being the highest mountain in the country (3,776 m), Fuji is considered as the symbol, the sacred icon of Japan, and attracts cyclists from all over the world.

Stanning from a distance, climbing Fuji is not a piece of cake. The whole track to the 5th station (a place where the paved road ends) is just 11.4 km. But an average gradient of 9.97% makes it one of the most challenging climbs you’ve ever done.

If you don’t stray away from bad weather, you can climb the mount any time of the year. Those who are into competitive races, can take part into annual Tour of Japan, Fuji stage.

From Isadore’s team, the Velits brothers have climbed the Mount Fuji as a part of the Tour of Japan and inspired by the greatness of the mountain, they created the Climber's jersey - Mount Fuji edition. The jersey is made from Merino wool with lycra sleeves and side panels. The combination of these two materials makes an apparel ultra light and wicking which is essential for intensive rides.
